Lucy and I met each other sitting in a circle reading the Bible with a group made up of half Chinese women and half American women. Lucy was a visiting scholar at the local university, Texas Tech University. With her oldest daughter being 10 years old, Lucy was nervous about how this pregnancy would go having been so long since her last birth. Lucy called me just as I was driving back in to town 2 days after her due date around midnight to tell me she was headed to the hospital.
Once active labor had set in, I headed up to the hospital early that morning. Lucy progressed quickly once I arrived. Her husband had flown in from China and had a scheduled flight to leave in two days. I loved seeing how they interacted and how he cared for her even though I couldn't understand a word exchanged between them. Lucy's husband only spoke Mandarin, but we were able to communicate without speaking a word.
Lucy pushed with multiple hands on deck to deliver a beautiful baby girl. Annabelle was born right at 8 pounds.
We will miss Lucy and her whole family as they travel back to where they call home in just one month.
