The Lemmons family was one of those families who unexpectedly had to send their son to the NICU. After Jude came almost 6 weeks early, he needed some extra help to regulate body temperature, bring down jaundice levels, and keep up consistent intake. Jessica, Jude’s mom, said leaving him at the hospital and going home was the hardest thing she has ever done. She either went to the hospital every 3 hours to breastfeed or have skin to skin time OR she would wake up and pump throughout the night. On top of that she would pump after each feed to keep up her milk supply. These are hours and hours spent traveling, feeding, pumping, and above all else NOT sleeping. She spent the rest of her time juggling how to be the best mom to her 20 month old son at home and the best mom to her preemie in the NICU. This NICU journey was emotional and physically taxing on the entire family. One moment they were told Jude would go home the next day, and the next moment they were putting a feeding tube back in and preparing to stay another day. I had the honor of documenting Jude’s first bath and one of the only times they held him in the NICU unattached from tubes or cords.
